Garden of Happiness

January 17, 2017

Our second day in Shanghai was an outing to the Yu Gardens and its surrounding market. Our first day showed us the modern shops and skyline of Shanghai and the Yu Gardens was an experience that felt much more like China. The garden is over 450 years old, but with Shanghai’s turbulent history I think most of the structures have been rebuilt in the last century. This did not detract from the experience. Read more…

Mr. John Willard Marriott

January 12, 2017

I purposefully glossed over part of our first day experience in Shanghai because I thought there was one place that deserved its own post.

We were only staying in downtown Shanghai for two nights so we decided to splurge a little on the hotel. We didn’t stay the Westin and its acrobat filled brunches, but I don’t know if we could have had a better experience than the J.W. Marriott in Tomorrow Square. Read more…

Shanghaied

January 11, 2017

We stSONY DSCarted our new year in Shanghai, China. For everyone but Michael this was our first time in China and none of us had ever been to Shanghai before. We arrived at the airport around eleven and followed the signs for the 144 Hour Transit Visa desk. There were only a couple of people in front of us, but the process took quite a while for all five of us. Kira had all of the papers ready and kept things moving, but it was long enough that all of our bags were waiting for us when we finished with immigration. Read more…

The Vacation

January 10, 2017

leavingThis is a picture of the Tokyo Donnellys on our way to the airport at about 5am on New Year’s Day 2017. We look happier than we should be given the early hour and the fact that we are sharing the trains with the previous nights revelers. It was an interesting train ride. Some of these revelers had left evidence of their over indulgence on the floor of our train car and some (the same?) were passed out at the other end of the car. We were not deterred. This was a new year and we were going to start it off with a new adventure. Read more…

Visa Vis

December 29, 2016

tldr – getting my visa for India was an ordeal and Kira is great.

This is going to sound like a story of procrastination, but for anyone who knows Kira you will know that isn’t her style. We are going to India over the winter break and you need a tourist visa to enter the country. You can apply for the visa online within 30 days of your trip and up until 4 days before you leave. With that in mind Kira started the process more than two weeks before we were leaving. Here is what happened. Read more…

I’m With Her

November 2, 2016

h I’ve been thinking about writing this post for a while now and I finally decided I needed to write this before the Presidential election next week. I’ve already voted and I don’t expect this post to convince anyone to change their vote this close to the election, but I wanted to put my thoughts out there for posterity. I want to look back 20 years from now and remember what I was thinking during this crazy election. Read more…

Let Me Sum Up

August 9, 2016

Writing up the Mt. Fuji climb took the wind out of my sails on the whole blogging thing, but Michael and I have still been keeping busy. My last post was two weeks ago so I’m just going to list out the things we’ve done since. Read more…
