Merlin’s Rest

July 18, 2011

For tonight’s blog I was faced with a decision. I knew that I wanted to have a blog post that had something with Merlin. Merlin means wizard and I can’t blog about wizards for a week and not include him.

Choice 1 – Re-Read The Once and Future King by T.H. White. Analyze the intricate characterization of the Wizard Merlin and it’s effects on modern literature and entertainment.

Choice 2- Go down to our local pub, Merlin’s Rest and quaff a few pints with my wife and some friends.

I’ll let you guess how long I thought that over.

Given the heat here in the Twin Cities we were looking forward to escaping into some air-conditioned bliss. Unfortunately while Merlin’s Rest has a great pub atmosphere, the best selection of single malt Scotch Whisky or single malt Irish Whisky anywhere in Minnesota, great food and some of the harder to find British beers, what they do not have is a full throttle Air Conditioner. It was cooler inside the very well themed pub than it was outside, but I was hoping to be a cold for a little while. I can’t really complain. The beer was cold and the crisps were served piping hot with an amazing cajun aioli that also tasted pretty good on the onion rings. It must not have been too uncomfortable because we stayed for a second round. For the second round Kira actually drank the Merlin’s Kool-Aid, I took a sip of the Kool-Aid and it seemed like a very dangerous drink.

We lucked into an interesting night at Merlin’s Rest, Shanty Pub Sing. We opted to sit on the non-Shanty side so that we could have some conversation, but the singing coming from the other half of the bar made for a great background to our evening.  It was distant enough that we could all talk and the evening passed very quickly in conversation.

Also just for posterity. Next year’s blog topic got discussed tonight. It’s still in the idea phase, but if it happens it should be a lot of fun.

Damn Good Reference to Merlin for this Blog: “The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails.

Weird… Just started a new book last night while you were at the pub. I was debating what to read next after finishing the Earth’s Children series… I decided on Deepak Chopra’s Return of Merlin. Imagine that!

Of course you and I both know there is no such thing as a coincidence.

It was. We had just a couple beers, some munchies and some great conversation.
